Men

Men called to the ministry are those whom Christ saves, shapes in godly character and gifts for service, and whom the church recognizes and sets apart according to Scripture. In the New Testament, this is seen especially in the qualifications for elders/overseers and deacons in passages like 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.

Men are first called out of sin into salvation and discipleship:

  • Some are particularly called to preach, shepherd, and lead.
  • This call is not mainly about status but about representing Christ, speaking His Word, and caring for His people.
  • Character Qualifications (1 Timothy 3; Titus 1).

Scripture emphasizes who a man is before what he can do:

  • A man should be above reproach, faithful to one wife, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money.
  • He must manage his household well, with believing or faithful children, because caring for his family is a proving ground for caring for God’s church.

Spiritual Competence and Convictions:

  • Men should be able to teach, holding firmly to sound doctrine so they can encourage believers and refute error.
  • Men must have a high view of Scripture, wisdom, courage, kindness, and a pattern of godly living that others can safely imitate.

Affirmed by the Church:

  • A genuine call includes an inner desire for the work and an outward confirmation from the congregation and its leaders.
  • The church recognizes his gifts, character, and fruit, then sets him apart (ordination) as an overseer/elder or deacon to serve.
  • Mostly, the individuals chosen for ministry possess a God-given desire to serve, exhibit Christlike character in accordance with 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, demonstrate sound doctrine and teaching ability, and receive clear affirmation from the local church..
